Toyota Motor Corp. retained its No. 1 ranking in a recent consumer survey about the most eco-friendly companies in Japan, mainly because of its active marketing of hybrid vehicles, a private market research agency said Thursday.
Other carmakers making green vehicles also did well in the survey by MM Research Institute Ltd., with Nissan Motor Co., known for its Leaf electric vehicle, moving up to sixth place from 11th, and Mitsubishi Motors Corp., which has launched the i-MiEV electric car, rising to 12th from 18th. The previous survey was in 2009.
Panasonic Corp. moved up a notch into second place, with many respondents saying it produces many energy-saving products.
Tokyo Electric Power Co. climbed to fourth from seventh place on the back of various environmental initiatives.
The poll was conducted online on 1,094 consumers between Jan. 28 and Feb. 1.
