Based on U.S. News editors' analysis of 62 leading automotive reviews and test drives, the 2008 Toyota Camry ranks #3 of 25 in Affordable Midsize Cars.
The Camry is a refined cruiser with a comfortable interior and a reputation for good quality and value. If you’re in the market for an affordable midsize car, you should also consider the top-rated Honda Accord. If you like the Camry but want better gas mileage, consider the Toyota Camry Hybrid.
Good performance, an accommodating passenger cabin and a reputation for quality put the 2008 Toyota Camry near the top of its class. A 2007 redesign gave the sedan an expanded cabin and sharper appearance, but Car and Driver notes the Camry is still "the crown prince of mainstream," a sentiment other writers share.
The 2008 Camry is also unanimously seen as a good value. The Kansas City Star notes, "All of the traditional attributes still apply: dependability, strong resale value, and unexpected praise from your Aunt Betty for having shown such good sense. Don't tell her how quick it is." U.S. News reviewer Rick Newman also comments on the Camry's value: "For a decent price (a well-equipped model lands in the low $20s) the Camry is an utterly unobtrusive ride, quiet, comfortable, and easily maneuverable." IntelliChoice gives the 2008 Camry an "Excellent" value rating, based on the total cost of ownership compared to other midsize sedans.
However, there are a handful who feel Toyota's quality is slipping. Toyota fell from first place to fifth place in an annual Consumer Reports reliability survey, and the V6 Camry received a "Below Average" rating.
The 2008 Toyota Camry dropped its base CE trim this year, and now offers a base trim, as well as the LE, SE or XLE trim with either a four cylinder or V6 engine. The Camry is also available as a hybrid car.
